TACKLING HUNGER AFGHANISTAN

A LAND OF WAR

After three decades of war and recurring natural disasters, more than half of Afghanistan’s population of 27 million is living under the poverty line. This is illustrated by the fact that Afghanistan is listed as 172 out of 187 countries in the Human Development Index. It is a country that has long suffered from severe poverty with limited access to food and other basic necessities. Over seven million of Afghanistan’s population, close to one-third of the population, are food insecure, and a further fourteen percent are considered to be borderline food-insecure.

TACKLING HUNGER

In June of 2015, we embarked on a project aimed at assisting some of Afghanistan’s most deprived families. A campaign was launched in the UK to raise funds to provide hundreds of poor families with food parcels during the month of Ramadan when most of the population would be fasting during the daylight hours.

WHAT WE DID

With the help of a local NGO, our team compiled a list of some of the most needy families in various areas of Afghanistan. Food parcels containing various products were prepared and delivered to the families.
