REFUGEE
CRISIS MACEDONIA

IN SEARCH OF SAFETY

In 2015 the refugee crisis saw millions of people flee violence, persecution and poverty from several regions in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia, in search of safety. The UN estimated 60,000 refugees had already made the journey across the Mediterranean Sea in 2015, while another 1,800 attempted the crossing but did not survive.

Tens of thousands of refugees were passing through Macedonia on a daily basis in a bid to reach the EU. Unfortunately the Macedonian government forbade NGOs from assisting the refugees with any type of aid forcing refugees to walk for days without access to food, drink or medicine unless they already had such provisions with them.

EASING THEIR HARDSHIP

In July of 2015, one of our long standing partner organisations based in Macedonia began lobbying their government calling for change to the restrictions stopping humanitarian organisations from assisting the refugees passing through their country.

After successfully forcing a change to their governments stance on the refugees we received a request from our partner organisation for assistance in providing the refugees with food parcels as they entered Macedonia and began their journey towards the Serbian border.

WHAT WE DID

Having already purchased large quantities of food and drink earlier in July of 2015, we provided funds towards the cost of distribution. The funds were used for fuel costs for the distribution of the food and drink.
