A DEADLY CONFLICT
The Republic of Yemen is one of the driest, poorest and least developed countries in the world. It ranks 140 out of 182 countries on the UNDP Human Development Index (2009). An estimated 42 percent of the people are poor, and one Yemeni in five is malnourished.
In March of 2015 a conflict broke out between the government and Houthi rebels. The violence quickly spread across the country and a full scale war ensued causing widespread displacement and a large number of casualties.
