HUNGER, FOOD
& NUTRITION SOMALIA

A NATURAL & MAN MADE DISASTER

Decades of conflict have left over 1.1 million Somalis displaced within their own country, and almost a million as refugees in neighboring countries. High food prices, combined with frequent droughts and floods have compounded poverty and continue to threaten livelihoods.

Somalia has an estimated population of 12 million. About 12 million Somalis are poor across multiple dimensions (health, education, standard of living). Overall, 73 percent of Somalis live on US$2 per day.

FIGHTING HUNGER

In July of 2016, we embarked on a project aimed at assisting some of Somalia’s most deprived families. A campaign was launched in the UK to raise funds to provide some of the poorest families with food parcels during the month of Ramadan when they would be fasting during the daylight hours.

WHAT WE DID

With the help of a local NGO, our team compiled a list of some of the most needy families in various areas of Somalia. Food parcels containing various products were prepared and delivered to the families.
