TACKLING HUNGER

Gambia is one of Africa’s smallest and poorest nations, ranking 168th out of 187 countries in the United Nations Development Programme’s 2011 human development index.

 

Over 60% of all Gambians depend on agriculture for their livelihood. Food and income insecurity are widespread due to crop failures and shortages of cash. Every year, poor households in rural areas face the “hungry season”, a period of two to four months at the peak of the rains, when household food stocks are low or depleted.

SUPPORT FOR GAMBIA’S DEPRIVED FAMILIES

In October of 2012, we embarked on a project aimed at assisting some of Gambia’s most deprived families.

 

A campaign was launched in the UK to raise funds to provide hundreds of poor families with meat parcels during the festive period of Eid. The recipients of the meat parcels were to be families who would not normally be able to afford any kind of meat products.

WHAT WE DID

With the help of  a local NGO, our food and nutrition team compiled a list of some of the most deprived families in various areas of the Lower River District of Gambia.

 

Good quality livestock, in the form of cows, were sought and purchased. Meat parcels were prepared and distributed to hundreds of families in various areas of the Lower River District of Gambia.
